Will Smith Teases Possible Return to The Matrix, But Won't Be Starring in Upcoming Sequel

In a surprising social media post, actor Will Smith recently hinted at a potential return to The Matrix franchise. However, industry insiders have confirmed that Smith will not be appearing in the upcoming Matrix sequel from Warner Bros.

On Monday, Smith shared a cryptic video on Instagram referencing his past involvement with The Matrix. The clip noted that in 1997, the Wachowskis had offered Smith the lead role of Neo, which ultimately went to Keanu Reeves. Smith said he turned down the part, believing the comedy Wild Wild West was a better fit at the time.

The post seemed to suggest Smith may be involved with the new Matrix project in some capacity. But according to reports, that is not the case. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Smith will not be starring in the upcoming Matrix film, which is being written and directed by Drew Goddard.

While the details of Smith's social media tease remain unclear, it's possible it could be tied to a Super Bowl commercial or some other type of promotional tie-in. The original Matrix trilogy, released between 1999-2003, was a groundbreaking sci-fi action franchise that helped cement Reeves' status as an action star.

Fans have long wondered what The Matrix would have been like with Smith in the lead role instead of Reeves. In his Instagram post, Smith jokingly told himself to "Wake up, Will... The Matrix has you." However, it appears Smith's connection to the new Matrix installment will be limited, if it exists at all.

The upcoming Matrix film is shrouded in secrecy, with few concrete details known about the plot or returning cast members. But Smith's tease, while intriguing, does not seem to reflect any actual involvement on his part. Audiences will have to wait and see what the Wachowskis and Goddard have in store when the new Matrix movie eventually hits theaters.
