The Year of the Snake is starting off with a bang for Kobe Bryant fans. Nike is set to release two new colorways of the Kobe 5 Protro model to celebrate the Year of the Snake on the Chinese zodiac calendar.
The first colorway, an "Eggplant" purple version, is slated to drop on January 9th. But the real standout is the University Red colorway releasing on January 18th.
This Kobe 5 features a rich red upper with regal gold accents, perfectly capturing the Chinese philosophy behind the Year of the Snake. The shoes will come with a special red/gold dust bag and a "Year of the Mamba" shoebox.
The adult sizes will retail for $190, while grade school sizes will be $120. Fans will be able to purchase these shoes from the Nike SNKRS app and other select retailers.
Timing couldn't be better for the Kobe brand, as 2025 marks the Year of the Snake. The connection between the Eastern tradition and Kobe's "Black Mamba" alter ego provides endless storytelling opportunities that Nike seems eager to explore.
