New Balance is no stranger to pushing the boundaries of its popular models, and the New Balance 8040 is a prime example. First unveiled in 2024, this strapped-up sandal version of the trendy 9060 lifestyle shoe has been slowly making its way onto the market, though it hasn't quite generated the same level of hype as its loafer counterpart, the 1906L.
The "Great Plains" colorway is the latest addition to the 8040 lineup, following on the heels of dark brown and navy versions that released last year. Like its predecessors, this new iteration features the same stability trainer sole as the 9060, but with a totally different upper construction.

The entire base of the 8040 is made up of pigskin suede, save for a synthetic guard over the toe. This monotone "Great Plains" colorway gives the sandal a clean, minimalist look that should appeal to fans of the brand's understated aesthetic.

While the 8040 may not be for everyone, those who are drawn to its unique silhouette will have the chance to add it to their rotation when it hits the market in Spring/Summer 2025 for $120. Be sure to keep an eye out for official release details and where to buy information in the coming months.
With New Balance continuing to push the boundaries of its iconic models, it will be interesting to see how the 8040 sandal is received by sneakerheads and casual wearers alike. One thing's for sure - it's a bold move that's sure to turn some heads.
