On my way to meet up with the focal point of this article I couldn't help but wonder what type of magic we were going to get on film and recording. Ive known the homie, Mylkweed, for a number of years now and every encounter that we have shared has always been an enlightening one. With those memories intacked I continued to my destination knowing I was about to learn something new.
We meet up at his apartment, which doubles as a creative work space. I wanted to do this interview in an environment that was comfortable for him in the hopes that I would be able to extract more information. I was trying to learn about his creative process and watch as he went through the steps of that process.
As soon as you walk into his domain you experience and explosion of creativity. Garments he is working on for his clothing line, blank canvases ready to be painted, paint brushes and colored markers scattered about asking to be used, beats playing from his speakers ready to be rapped over.
After some small talk I found out that he does even more than I initially thought. I thought he was just a painter and rapper, but I was off. He is a dope painter and excellent rapper. However, he is also an illustrator, clothing designer, graffiti artist, and tattoo artist. He is damn good at all of them.
I had to know how he finds the time and energy to do all that he does. He tells me about getting his sleep or at least trying to get his sleep. He says he wakes up around 5am and tries to be in bed by midnight, but usually he gets to bed around 2am. When he does answer that 5am alarm he gets his mind right with his daily affirmations: "I am supreme, I am magnificent, I am righteous, I am power, I am love". His mantra is followed by some "practical planning" towards his daily goal, then it's time to grind.
In my first interviewed with Mylkweed on the Raw Brilliance Podcast I learned a lot about his upbringing and back ground. He tells me that he is still working on redefining relationships with some of the family and friends we discussed in the first interview.
One thing that most people may not understand about Mylkweed is that he is a very introspective individual who dances to his own drum. He is a big dude that dresses with his own flair, so you might try and judge a book by its cover when you first see him. What ever you think you are going to get will definitely not be the case when it comes to this gentleman.
Whatever troubles he faced as a youth help make him the person he is today. This person at the time of this interview is thoughtful, thought provoking, and calculated. Every word he speaks has a meaning and purpose. Even on this day when he is battling a cloudy head because of his allergies he is still taking the time to think out his answers. You can tell that everyday he wakes up he is trying to be the best version of himself with every action and word.
It's like he is trying to be like the paintings he creates, the clothing he designs, bars he spits, the characters he draws, and the tattoos he puts to skin: challenging, detailed, refreshing, nuanced. His life is imitating his art.
