Masimo CEO Joe Kiani Resigns Amid Legal Dispute with Apple

Updated: Nov 5

September 25, 2024 - In a surprising turn of events, Masimo CEO Joe Kiani has announced his resignation from the company. This news comes in the midst of an ongoing legal battle between Masimo and tech giant Apple.

Masimo, a company specializing in health technologies, has been locked in a dispute with Apple over the blood oxygen monitoring feature on the Apple Watch. Earlier this year, a U.S. court ruled that Apple had infringed on one of Masimo's pulse oximetry technology patents with the Apple Watch. This decision was later upheld by the ITC, forcing Apple to stop selling the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 in the U.S.

To work around the sales ban, Apple has agreed to disable the pulse oximetry features on Apple Watch models sold in the U.S. market. However, this ongoing legal battle has clearly taken a toll, leading to the resignation of Masimo CEO Joe Kiani.

In a statement, Masimo announced that Kiani has informed the company's board of his decision to step down as CEO. Michelle Brennan, currently a member of Masimo's board, has been appointed as the company's interim CEO during this transition.

Brennan expressed her gratitude for the board's trust and excitement to help Masimo continue its growth as an "innovation-focused company." She also stated that the board and management team are committed to learning from and working with Masimo's employees while ensuring seamless service and support for customers.

While the exact reasons for Kiani's resignation are not yet known, his involvement in the dispute with Apple was well-documented. Earlier this year, the former CEO had accused Apple of "masquerading" the health features on the Apple Watch and suggested that they were unreliable. Kiani also claimed that Apple had deliberately taken Masimo's intellectual property.

The legal battle between Masimo and Apple is ongoing, and it remains to be seen how the resignation of Kiani will impact the company's strategy moving forward. Masimo has stated that it remains committed to its current plans, including a review of its consumer audio and consumer healthcare businesses.

As the tech industry continues to navigate the complexities of intellectual property and the integration of health technologies, this high-profile dispute between Masimo and Apple serves as a reminder of the challenges and tensions that can arise in the pursuit of innovation and market dominance.
