Lil Wayne is feeling disappointed after being passed over to perform at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in his hometown of New Orleans. The NFL and Roc Nation instead selected Kendrick Lamar to headline the coveted performance slot.
"It broke me and I'm just trying to put me back together," Lil Wayne said on social media after learning he wouldn't get the Super Bowl gig. "But my God, have you all helped me. Thanks to all my peers, my friends, my family, my homies on the sports television and everybody repping me … I feel like I let all of y'all down by not getting that opportunity, but I'm working on me and I'm working. So, thank you."
The New Orleans native had high hopes of taking the Super Bowl stage, telling fans at his Lil WeezyAna Fest: "I said to myself, 'I wanna be on stage for the Super Bowl one day in front of my mom.' And I worked my ass off to get that spot, that position. It was ripped away from me. But this moment right here? They can't take that. They can't take that from me."
While Lil Wayne won't be the halftime performer, the NFL has offered him a consolation prize - a weekly guest spot on the NFL Gameday Morning pregame show for the rest of the season. Starting on November 17, the Young Money rapper will join host Rich Eisen and analysts Kurt Warner, Gerald McCoy and Steve Mariucci on the Sunday morning program.
The Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show is set to take place on February 9, 2025 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Though Lil Wayne won't be the main attraction, he'll have a platform to connect with football fans throughout the season on NFL Network.
