J Mac Tha Dragon: Its Levels To This

It's always a pleasure speaking with someone dedicated to their craft. J Mac The Dragon is one of those ones. A college graduate taking the J. Cole route breaking into the industry.

I meet up with J Mac in the small town of Maxwell, Tx, located just outside of San Marcos, Tx, where he attended Texas State University. A contrast to the Irving, Tx environment in which he grew up in.

When he got to TXST becoming a rapper was the last thing on his mind. Even though music was always a love of his the family dynamic that he comes from didn't promote such a career choice and came as a shock to many when he started on his path. Unfazed he stayed the course and continued to grow his talent while making his family proud and getting his bachelor and master degrees.

He may not have envisioned a career as a rap artist, but he still was a rapper without knowing. He would rap to beats with friends in the lunch rooms while in grade school and when he arrived at TXST he joined HIP Hop Congress and found himself sounded by peers that were aspiring artist. No matter where he was there was music waiting and calling. He would even rap with those aspiring artist he met and became friends with, but he never put together a project or body of work to consider himself a true MC.

That all changed in 2014 when he heard J. Coles album, Forest Hill Drive. The album inspired him so much that he went home for Christmas break and told his friends and family that he was going to give being a rapper a real shot.

J Mac has done just that with each project he has dropped. You see the growth and maturity in each project. Like he tells me in our interview, he has "proved that [he] can rap". Now it is about getting the world to see the talent that he has cultivated with more visuals.

However, don't think he is resting on the levels he has reached. He says, If you know music then you know there are "levels to this". He still gets motivation from hearing other artist techniques and styles. As an anime fan he gives an analogy using Dragon Ball Z and his favorite character Goku. Goku is always looking to challenge himself, going against the best and strongest fighters to push himself, so he can reach new levels.

Being the nephew of former University of Texas star and Hall Of Famer, Kenneth Sims, greatness is in his blood. Not only is greatness in him, but the talent is undeniable. Im looking forward to watching him grow and reach the highest levels.
