The YBN collective, which rose to prominence in the mid-2010s, had a meteoric rise and an equally abrupt downfall. In a recent interview, Cordae, one of the group's former members, has shed light on the real reasons behind the YBN breakup.
The YBN Backstory:
The YBN collective was founded in 2014 by Nahmir and Almighty Jay, who connected while playing Xbox Live. A few years later, Cordae joined the group, and they released their sole project, "YBN: The Mixtape," in 2018. However, the group's success was short-lived, as they disbanded just a few years after their initial formation.
Cordae's Perspective on the Breakup:
In a new vlog with YouTuber Peaks100, Cordae candidly discussed the reasons behind the YBN breakup. He attributed it to a combination of bad business dealings and a single argument that the group couldn't recover from.
"The business side of it was kind of like, super fucked up honestly," Cordae revealed. "N-ggas got into a big argument in Europe. People say certain things they can't take back – it's still love but it's just some shit that you just can't."
Cordae emphasized that despite the fallout, he still maintains good relationships with both Nahmir and Almighty Jay. "Nahmir, that's still my homie. Jay, I still fuck with bruh. Nahmir threw n-ggas that [alley] oop so I'm very grateful."
Almighty Jay's Perspective:
In a 2021 Instagram post, Almighty Jay had previously called out the group's former manager, James McMillan, accusing him of "signing n-ggas to janky deals and fuck[ing] em over." Jay also claimed that McMillan had trademarked the YBN name without the group's knowledge.
The YBN breakup was a complex and multifaceted issue, as evidenced by the differing perspectives from Cordae and Almighty Jay. While the group may have disbanded, it's clear that the members still maintain a level of respect and camaraderie, even if the business side of things ultimately proved to be their downfall.
