Australian rapper Iggy Azalea is embroiled in a major dispute with her former record label, Universal Music Group. In a series of scathing posts on X (formerly Twitter), Azalea accused the company of being "criminals" and owing her millions in unpaid international royalties.
According to Azalea, she was never paid a single royalty by Universal for her music outside of the United States, despite hits like "Fancy" and "Black Widow" being global successes. She claims the amount owed to her is in the "8 figure range."
Azalea revealed that when her lawyers recently tried to reconcile the issue, Universal only offered her a measly $18,000 settlement - something she says is a "normal response" from the label's lawyers before they are forced to pay out millions in court.
"Crazy how in my entire career I was never paid a single royalty by universal music for anything outside of the USA," Azalea wrote. "They owe me millions of dollars in back pay, that they technically stole from me, as per my contract I am due payment."
The rapper did not hold back in her criticism of the music conglomerate, calling them the "scummiest company" that "actively take advantage of ALL of their artists in perpetuity for their own gain."
Azalea expressed sympathy for other artists who may not have the resources to fight Universal's alleged shady practices, stating that the label "gets away with this behavior" when artists can't afford to pursue what they're owed.
In a follow-up post, Azalea issued a direct warning to Universal: "Universal music mark my words you ugly bitch – You will pay me what's owed."
This is the latest high-profile dispute between an artist and their label. It remains to be seen how Universal will respond to Azalea's allegations and whether she will be able to recoup the millions she claims the company owes her.
