Ice Cube Praises Tyler, The Creator's Creativity and Compares Him to Legendary Rap Acts

In a recent interview with HipHopDX, legendary West Coast rapper Ice Cube shared his admiration for fellow Angeleno Tyler, The Creator, praising the Odd Future founder's creativity and individuality.

Cube noted that Tyler represents a side of Los Angeles that is often overlooked - "ultra creative individuals who won't conform to the culture of gangbanging. They're going to be themselves." He then drew comparisons between Tyler and two highly respected West Coast rap groups - The Pharcyde and the Black Eyed Peas.

"You're going to always have those groups who are going to stay down with their own style and their own flavor, and going to win with it. Because they're not conforming, they're not being what you want them to be; they're being who they are. And you gotta salute that," Cube said.

Tyler, The Creator has earned praise from a wide array of influential figures over the years, from Kanye West and JAY-Z to Pharrell Williams, who once tweeted that Tyler embodied the "artistic freedom to be you and make whatever you want."

The Hawthorne native has continued to ascend to new heights in recent years. In 2024, he released his eighth studio album Chromakopia, which topped the Billboard 200 and was named the second best rap album of the year by HipHopDX. He also hosted the 10th installment of his Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival and unveiled his debut fashion collection with Louis Vuitton.

Meanwhile, Ice Cube has enjoyed a successful year of his own, dropping his 11th album Man Down and expanding his BIG3 basketball league. With a massive Chromakopia World Tour and a long-awaited fourth Friday film in the works, 2025 is shaping up to be another big year for both Tyler, The Creator and the legendary Cube.
