In a recent interview on his America Nu Network, a dejected Dame Dash shared his thoughts after his one-third ownership in Roc-A-Fella Records was bought by the New York State government for just $1 million.
Dash seemed to use the underwhelming auction outcome to downplay the popularity and influence of his former business partner JAY-Z. "What this really taught me was that, in the world, homie isn't as big as he portrays," Dash said. He expressed surprise that "no one even showed up" to bid on the Roc-A-Fella shares, and claimed that even JAY-Z "didn't even make a bid" because "he didn't think it was worth $3 million."
Dash also revealed that at one point, Drake had expressed interest in purchasing the Roc-A-Fella shares and made a $6 million offer, but then "disappeared" without explanation. "Drake did put a bid in for $6 million, but then he disappeared. I don't know what happened," Dash said. "But other than that, no one was serious. No one wanted that shit, period."
The auction was an attempt to settle Dash's extensive debts, which total nearly $10 million. This includes $8.7 million owed to the State of New York in back taxes, as well as $145,000 owed to New York City's Department of Social Services in unpaid child support. Dash also owes $823,000 to filmmaker Josh Webber, who successfully sued him for copyright infringement and defamation.
The Roc-A-Fella shares were ultimately bought by an anonymous state government employee, who plans to sell them on for a higher sum and put the proceeds towards paying off Dash's debts.
This latest drama is just the latest chapter in the ongoing feud between Dash and JAY-Z, who were once co-founders of the iconic Roc-A-Fella label. Dash has previously accused JAY-Z of trying to "poison" the auction by claiming that the rights to JAY-Z's debut album Reasonable Doubt will revert back to him in 2031 due to copyright law's termination right.
Lawyers for New York State, however, argued that the copyrights will continue to be held by Roc-A-Fella Inc. until 2098, while also accusing the label of not providing proof of the royalties the album generates. A judge ultimately refused to settle the matter prior to the auction, saying he had no legal power to rule on the copyright disputes.
It's clear that the bad blood between Dash and JAY-Z continues to simmer, with Dash using this failed auction as an opportunity to take more shots at his former friend and business partner. The saga of Roc-A-Fella's legacy shows no signs of ending anytime soon.
